WHAT IS A KIKI SESSION?
Kiki Sessions are spaces for people involved in Ballroom, or looking to become involved, to practice their skills depending on the categories they "walk" (or participate) in. These categories can range from Runway to Face to Performance and more. It is a communal space meant to build solidarity and get prepared for "walking" in future Balls. As a communal effort, the "elders," or more experienced members of the community, will take a position of leadership to help those who are newer to Ballroom develop their skills.
Historically, Ballroom has been a space for queer and trans people of color to gather and celebrate their identities when facing racism and oppression from cisgender, heteronormative societies, as well as white LGBTQ+ spaces. Houses would form based on the need for community, as QTPOC elders would care for young, homeless LGBTQ+ people.
