Don’t Be Fooled by Prop 133; Vote No

I think it's fair to say that we are all opposed to human trafficking. Does this mean we should support Proposition 133? Absolutely not. Prop 133 is written to appeal to our sense of moral decency, but its actions completely miss the mark when it comes to combating human trafficking.

One red flag is that organizations working everyday to combat human trafficking and support victims do not endorse this bill. In fact, many oppose it. Upon further examination, we can see why. If passed, a trafficking victim forced to participate in illegal activities to stay alive may receive the harshest possible punishment, the same as is proposed for actual traffickers. 133 would take away a judge’s ability to evaluate a case on its specific considerations, such as a victim’s coercion into trafficking activity.

So who is pushing this proposition? Protect Kids Colorado, the same group that has tried to pass legislation to expand the definition of human trafficking to include bringing people to Colorado to access abortion and gender-affirming care, both completely legal forms of healthcare in the state. This group would likely continue to lobby to expand the definition in its attempts to criminalize abortion and gender-affirming care, especially since they also back Propositions 134 and 135.

Don’t fall for the lies and deceit put forward by Protect Kids Colorado. If you care about human trafficking, look into supporting organizations actually supporting victims and protecting women like the Laboratory to Combat Human Trafficking, not organizations like Protect Kids Colorado that use victims as lip service to push their own dark priorities.

Vote NO on Prop 133.
